Terbang : Finally the Flying Sikh’s story takes off

Terbang : Finally the Flying Sikh’s story takes off

On a lockdown evening the two founding members of Route Hunters and Karamjit Singh sat for a small discussion. Up until then, we had featured Karamjit on several video’s and track shootout and we realised that the current generation Malaysian’s had little to no idea who this legend was. 5 years later we were honoured to witness the first days’s shoot of his life story coming to life on the silver screen. Here’s how the story behind the story goes.

That was a good interview

After a string of video’s we realised that there was very limited online presence of Karamjit Singh and his 2002 World Rally Campaign. That was the year the Petronas Eon Racing Team and Karamjit Singh with navigator Allen Oh will come home with the FIA World Championship trophy for the production class. Those born in the 90’s and 00’s however have no clue about this. We felt that we had to set the record straight and called Karam over and get some trivia’s on his 3 decades of rallying.

With the camera running and tea cups full, what we would get was a full uncut version of Karam’s whole story, captured at every detail. We are hardcore fans of Karam, in fact your’s truly’s bedroom wall poster was Karam and Allen Oh with the FIA trophies with the Evo 6 PERT car airborne. But this interview had so much of unheard stories we were totally blown away.

The amount of hours spent producing the 2 part videos was insane, something that could’ve only be done by us back then during the lockdown, thanks to the collective effort of the Route Hunters team.

From the sofa to the discussion table

That interview video made it’s circulation around social media stirring interest about Karamjit Singh. In forum’s and chat groups the links were making their rounds, sparking debates and introducing Karamjit to a whole new generation. There were more contents produced about Karamjit, with more fans tracing down more contents about him it was simply amazing.

Not long after we would find ourselves sitting in the discussion table where the groundworks of the ‘Terbang’ movie was laid. We were interviewing Karam’s friends from his childhood, and drafting all kinds of crazy ideas to bring this movie to life.

It would take 2 years to finally see a movie set featuring Evo 6 based Group A Proton PERT rally cars on a set, with PERT branding all over. Seeing Irfan Zaini blew our minds away, as the cinematic take on Karamjit. We felt truly humbled and proud at the same time.

A story every Malaysian needs to know

Karamjit Singh’s story is beyond the man himself. It’s a story of national pride, a true testament to the Malaysia Boleh spirit. It was during our interview we realised Karamjit’s story was already like a movie script, and it took alot of Malaysians beyond race and religion coming together to clinch that World Championship trophy.

We at Route Hunters Malaysia are happy we could play our part in bringing this story to the silver screen.
