There’s one driving force for the serious rise in pick-up truck sales in Malaysia. Its cool to ride a pick-up truck, period. We at Route Hunters are no strangers to the appeal of the pick-up truck, and we completely understand it’s appeal, both in image and lifestyle. The various brands who bring in these trucks into Malaysia like Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi recognizes this too.
More and more trucks are catering towards the lifestyle aspect and not just the utility part. Trucks are getting more comfortable, high tech, and smarter. This is exactly the direction Mitsubishi has turned to in revamping their brand’s Malaysian champion, the Triton. With prices ranging from RM100,200 to RM135,200, lots can be said about its 2019 iteration, but we have chosen to highlight 5 which makes it a compelling first choice if you are first time truck buyer.
Looks so cool it can cause climate change
We always maintain that looks are subjective, but one thing that cannot be denied is how striking the Triton looks against its competition. With that chiseled front end and blade like headlamps and generous amounts of chrome, you will not mistake it for anything else on the road. Well, except for the back portion where things are a little conservative. The rim design and the color options compliment the dominating front facia. Love it or hate it, you will be noticed. The rest, we let you decide if it’s a face you would love to be seen with.
4WD system that does the work
Unlike the 4WD systems of the past where you and a second gearknob to lock your differential and select your lower gears, the 2019 Triton comes with a rotary selector. Mitsubishi calls it the Super Select 4WD II (such an epic name!) under the 4Sure Control design theme, and how it works is you select the type of surface you want to drive on, which is Gravel, Mud, Sand and Rock, and the car does the power, braking and transmission management for you to ensure you keep driving without a hiccup.
With 181bhp and 430Nm of torque from the 2.4 liter MIVEC turbodiesel engine driving a 6 speed automatic gearbox, a first time truck owner will need an intelligent system like the Super Select 4WD II to reign in all that power on off road conditions.
Tons of safety features
The Mitsubishi Triton is not a small vehicle, which can be intimidating for the first time truck driver. Thankfully you have a whole set of electronic driving aids to help you maneuver it. The list includes things like Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Change Assist, Forward Collision Mitigation and this bombastic sounding Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System. What all these does in short is prevent you from accidentally colliding into other cars or objects when driving your truck, be it at parking speeds or on the road.
I personally know one hardworking previous generation Triton owner who could have benefited from this system; he ended up colliding with a concrete stump as it was out of sight due to the height of the truck. So these techs can be handy for even the most seasoned pick-up truck owner, it will work wonders for first time owners.
Civilized and well-appointed interior
Once upon a time, a pick-up trucks interior was functional at best. Today however there’s a whole lot more furnishing that could embarrass some passenger vehicles. From a push start button, steering wheel control for cruise control and audio. It even sports shift paddles for the automatic only Adventure X variant.
Besides that, all variants except for the base VGT models get a touch screen head unit with Bluetooth, USB and voice command. The Adventure X head unit also gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s even a rear charging slot and a mobile phone holder, with cupholders on the armrests! Handy, when you want to keep your friends occupied during a long haul road trip.
That warranty
Last but not least is the warranty package. With 200,000km or 5 years, whichever comes first, Mitsubishi Malaysia is offering the most comprehensive warranty coverage for a pick-up truck in Malaysia. In comparison to that, Toyota offers a similar 5 years of 150,000km warranty for its Hilux. Ford comes close with a 3 years / 100,000km manufacturer’s warranty + 2 years / 100,000km extended warranty, which is the next best thing. However Mitsubishi’s coverage on paper at least seems straightforward, which does aid in terms of ownership peace of mind.
So if you got inspired with the latest Hobbs and Shaw and wish to channel your inner Dwayne Johnson, or just wish for a multi-talented vehicle that caters for your active lifestyle, the Mitsubishi Triton is a good starting point. It’s a wholesome vehicle stylish enough to cut it in the urban jungle, yet capable enough to handle the roughest stuff that’s thrown at you in the great outdoors. Now it remains to see how it will actually perform out in the real world.
