5 road trips you can make to celebrate the reduced fuel prices this weekend

Like the climax of a romantic flick, the will-they-wont they suspense on what the retail price for fuel at the pumps for this week came to a conclusion.

The Ministry of Finance announced today evening that the pump retail price of RON95 Petrol would be RM1.93 / liter, RON97 Petrol at RM2.23 / liter, Euro 2M Diesel at RM2.04 from midnight today.

That means if you were to fuel up a 50 liter fuel tank with RON95 petrol, you would save RM13.50 with the new fuel prices. So what better way to celebrate the drop in fuel prices by contributing to the nation’s economy by setting off on a quick weekend road trip? Here are 5 locations we can suggest, ranging from just a 3 hour trip to an overnight stop.

Raub – Fish Head Curry

Raub is a quiet gold mine town which is surrounded by Durian country. It may not be the season for Durians but you can stop by the Chammang waterfalls in Bentong or head over for some nice Fish Head Curry at the Ratha Curry House in Raub. We had a blast when we followed Karamjit Singh here in a 740Le.

Fraser Hill – Mountain air and Durian

Squad goals

So this may be a getaway for some cool air and picturesque views instead of food, Fraser Hill’s is one of the closest hill stations to the Klang Valley for city folk to unwind. Your journey is greeted by the Sungai Selangor dam in KKB and it gets windy and twisty until you reach the top of the hill. The road is a drivers delight, except for one or two patchy surfaces, and you can choose to come back via Raub and Bentong if you’re feeling adventurous.

Jerantut – Patin Sungai

A much needed break at the Maran temple

Deep in the heartland of Pahang, the town of Jerantut is the first landing point of the Pahang river after exiting the Taman Negara vicinity. Its famous for one distinct produce, the Patin fish. This river fish is best enjoyed ala ‘masak tempoyak’ and its most sought after at this region. The scenic village and valley lined roads that lead to Jerantut which we covered in Episode 5, is just the right type of bonus one needs!

Penang – Nasi Kandar

What kind of road trip list would this be if we did not include Penang? From Cendol to Char Kuey Teow, and arguably some of the best food in Peninsular Malaysia, its worth heading over to Penang this weekend for a foodie’s trip. Since more is saved for every tank of fuel, you have more to spend on the food there. And if you were to follow the B roads like we did when we took the Peugeot Traveller to Penang, you save a whole lot on tolls too!

East Coast – Traditional Malay seafood

It may be the monsoon season on the east coast, but for some great traditional Malay food you cannot do better than the East Coast. Our first foray to the east was with the 500Nm Chevy Colorado Sport truck. You could get adventurous and venture inland to Tasik Kenyir for a day trip. Or you could head down to Kuantan and make your way to KL after putting up a night at these places.

Well whichever destination you should choose, just be safe, buckle up, and make sure you do not harm other road users, like cyclists. Even if they were to break the road rules, we do not subject them to harm, we are not Singaporeans. Stay safe and enjoy the fuel prices.
