2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence: Pricing’s here, but how does it compare to other luxury SUV’s?

We covered the top 10 things you need to know about the biggest BMW on sale in Malaysia today. Finally it has a price tag. Is the X7 worth the RM 673,323.61 it commands? Lets find out

Not quite if….

If a 7 seat Luxury SUV is what you desire, then there are other options. Notably the Volvo XC90. Sizewise it may not be as big as the X7, with smaller measurements in all 3 dimensions. But in terms of space, ergonomics and usability, its right there next to it.
Plus it features a punchy super-turbo engine and a really good EV powertrain too. Even the highest spec with Bowers and Wilkins stereo and Nappa leather, you save about RM270,000 over the BMW.

But bargain for the right reasons

What the Volvo does not provide is the performance of a full fledged 3.0 turbocharged engine, and the brand image commanded by blue blooded premium brands.

The closest rival to the BMW X7 is xDrive40i form is the Mercedes Benz GLS. Its one of the two 7 seat SUV’s on sale today. It’s got a premium interior, similar engine and gearbox, sound system, and similar toys. But at RM899,888.00, its significantly pricier than the X7.

Then there’s the Range Rover Sport. Although you could specify this car with 7 seats, that options not available in Malaysia. While it can be argued that it’s the more superior car in terms of off-road handling, we have yet to compare how the X7 fares on the road. Because that Range Rover can really hustle down our back roads. Yet, the RM130,000 price difference and the lack of a 3rd row could be the deciding factor.

Finally there’s the Audi Q7. Despite being cheaper than the BMW by RM70,000, the interior ambiance is nowhere near to that of the BMW’s. And thanks to BMW’s MASSIVE kidney grille, the road presence is significantly bigger with the X7 over the Q7.

Conclusion

While the Volvo is very much family use, and the Q7 ultimately lacks the presence and feel of the BMW, the X7 is big on presence, refinement, and convenience. For the price you pay, you get a premium vehicle with plenty of space for all 7 passengers.

To sweeten the deal, BMW has thrown in a 5 year, unlimited mileage warranty and free scheduled service program. What are your thoughts on the BMW X7? Share your thoughts in the comments!
