Im sure your newsfeed is full of content on the Proton S70, so here’s a simplified guide of what you need to know about Protons latest Sedan.
1. Its a C segment sedan
Which means it belongs in the same category as the Honda Civic, Mazda 3, and Toyota Corolla. Sizewise its definitely feels roomier than the Mazda 3 hatch and sedan. Maybe falls short in rear legroom compared to the Civic, but we still do not have the official measurements. The boot is 500 litres in capacity, making it bigger than the Civic, Mazda 3 sedan and the Corolla’s boot space.
2. Supposedly cost around RM100,000
Because during the drag race, the car that they pitted the S70 against were the Honda City and Toyota Vios. When asked why set it against cars from the B segment, the organising team said that they were similarly priced compared to the S70. Which means it would be priced between RM80,000 – RM100,000.
3. It shares the same engine as the Proton X50, without direct injection
Still a 1.5 liter 3 cylinder with a turbocharger. But it does not come with the direct injection technology that you see in the X70 and X50. As a result, you get only 150bhp and 226Nm. The torque figure is vital as its 6Nm more than the Civic ‘Ketam’, but 14Nm down from the current Civic FE. It is more torquey than the other rivals.
Power sent through a 7 speed double clutch gearbox
Just like on the X50 and the X70. There are some updates to the transmission, and with the noticeably lighter bodyweight, it did provide a more spirited acceleration feel compared to the crossover X50. Dare we say it felt more punchy off the line from the Mazda 3. But we do miss the full fat 255Nm from the direct injection engine.
5. Retuned gearbox and suspension for the local market
Further refinements have been made to the gearbox to make it more responsive apparently and as usual, the ride and handling has been tweaked to work on our roads. That’s 1.2 million km of road testing and 72,000 man hours. Which works out to be 682 times going around Peninsular Malaysia (Penang – JB – Kuantan – Kota Bharu – Penang) in distance, or 24 years of 8 hour work days in man hours. That’s proper R&D.
6. 3 Drive modes available
The gearbox, steering and engine has 3 different modes, which is Normal, Sport and Comfort. It really showed a difference on the handling course during our initial drive experience. We will be sharing the difference of each modes soon on our channels.
7. 4 variants
The variants are Executive, Premium, Flagship and Flagship X. Knowing Proton’s pricing in the past, the Flagship would be the most popular variant on sale. The Executive and Premium are closer specced, with the 10.25 inch instrument cluster, 12.3 inch infotainment screen, majority of the safety systems reserved for the Flagship and Flagship X.
8. New features for the Advance Driver Assistance System (ADAS)
Basic systems that come with the ADAS would be the following as you can see in this image.
What’s new for the S70 is the updated Autonomous Emergency Braking which features a Monocular Camera System, which detects the obstacles earlier. That provides an additional audio warning, an initial braking, before dropping the anchors to bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
9. 6 Charging options
There are 5 USB outlets in the car, with one Wireless Charger. Two USB chargers are set in the front (Type A and Type C) with the same pair for the rear seats. Plus there’s a Type A charger in the headliner too.
10. 7 colours
The colours are listed in the following photographs. The highlight colour here is the Teal Bayou Green which is special for the S70. A proper Malaysian colour, it looks better under the sun. This colour is only available for Flagship and the Flagship X variants.
11. Comes with an optional bodykit
Which features a front / rear bumper addition, side skirts and a rear spoiler. It does look significantly more aggressive compared to the standard car, giving it a denser look and feel.
This is all we have for you now on the S70 that you need to know. But we as well as other fellow journalists feel like this will be the modders delight of the millenials. What is your first impression on the Proton S70? Share your thoughts in the comments!
